Darjeeling
The Darjeeling hills form part of the Mahabharat range of the Lesser Himalayas in the state of West Bengal. Darjeeling is home to some of the world's most famous and sought after teas, which were first cultivated commercially in the area in 1856. The cool, temperate climate of the region means that tea bushes can thrive throughout the spring and summer, the first and second flush seasons.

Darjeeling was initially developed as a hill station during the British Raj. The comfortable climate of the area meant that it became a getaway for officials looking to escape the heat of the plains and cities, including Calcutta. The opening of the Darjeeling Himalayan railway in 1881 further established the area as a tourist getaway.
On clear days, the Himalayas, including Mount Everest can be seen from Darjeeling. The alpine and evergreen forests which cover the hills that are not under tea cultivation, are used by a wide range of bird and duck species on migration to and from Tibet.
