Ceylon (Sri Lankan) teas vary in flavour, from the mellow richness of low altitude teas, to the aromatic and citrussy mediums to the intensely flavoured high-altitude teas. As a general quality, Ceylon teas combines richness and strength with satisfying smoothness.
Sri Lanka's favourable weather conditions and fertile soil, mean that tea is the island’s single largest agricultural crop. Tea in Sri Lanka is grown at between 3,000 and 8,000 feet, the altitude and moist weather gives ideal conditions and the tea bushes flush frequently.
The altitude at which the tea is grown can have a great impact on the taste of the final cup. Low-grown teas tend to be stronger and richer, whereas high-grown teas tend to be brighter and more fragrant.
Sri Lanka was formerly the world’s largest producer of tea, but economic and political setbacks have forced Sri Lanka to reduce its yield.
The best Sri Lankan tea produced today is of the highest quality and is extremely sought after around the world.
