Vibrant green Sencha blended with rice kernels.

Popcorn tea was originally drunk by poor Japanese, as the rice served as a filler and reduced the price of the tea; today it is enjoyed by all those who love a toasty, nutty tea.

*Based on 3g per serving, infused 3 times.

Appearance: Matt green, neatly rolled leaves scattered with light red-brown kernels, flecked with popped rice

Infusion: Pale grass-green with yellow hues

Aroma: Soft, green tea freshness with cereal sweetness

Taste: Rich, complex, multi-layered with vivid grassy freshness of green tea being filled out by toasty grain fullness.

Infuse: 1 tbsp per cup; water temperature 80°C: infuse 3 minutes

  • Very Sensitive Tea

My first impression of this tea was one of deep revulsion, but after reviewing the brewing temperature, I have discovered that a small change in temperature can make a huge difference to the taste.

When the temperature is between 70c and 80c, the flavor is really nice. I think I like it best at around 75c, but I intend to experiment a little more. Towards the top of this range, bitterness becomes apparent, from the sencha and the rice.

Anything above 80c and the flavor from the rice becomes extremely unappealing, and the sencha is quite bitter. Now, the bitterness I could live with, but combined with the rice, it becomes really nasty - I can see why the previous reviewer compared it to Marmite.

When served at it's best, it has a delightful balance of sweetness, pleasantly light bitterness, freshness and a warming savory taste from the rice.

So, with this tea, I find that using a thermometer makes all the difference.
  • Marmite of teas

Never before have I had the experience of finding such a truly unique tea.
I consider this tea nothing short than the tea version of Marmite, for me personally I believe this to be more effective torture for me than say waterboarding.
I understand this tea was born out of the impoverished Japanese peasents of the dark ages, as a way of economising they would mix their tea with rice, corn to make it go further.
I cant help but think how much richer their lives would have been had they economised even further and just drank hot water.

Jokes aside, I think the quality of this tea is not in question, but I do warn all potential buyers it will most likely be a love/hate thing.
But at £2.90 its worth a go!

Must dash, need to exercise all and any pottery that has come into contact with this Satans brew! ;)
  • Tea with rice?

Green Tea with light red-brown kernels, flecked with popped rice?
Even for a connoisseur of tea this combination is a surprise. I like green tea and I like surprises, so I decided to buy Genmaicha Green Tea. As I said, I like green tea but I drink it quite rarely, due to its bitter taste. When I read on your website that green tea can be sweet I thought this might be what I have been looking for. And I wasn’t disappointed! Soft and refreshing with a touch of cereal sweetness. The smell of this tea is so natural. It brings memories of Summer and open fileds under a blue sky. With a taste thats so unique, soft, but rich at the same time. I use my new set of Gong Fu Tea to infuse the tea. I like to drink this tea after a meal, because it supports the natural processes of regulating and purifying the body. Usually I do not eat anything with tea, because the tea itself already has enough for me but if I do I eat piece of fruit for extra sweetness or oatmeal cookies. Since trying grenmaich tea for the first time it has now beome one of favourite teas.
