  • This is what tea should taste like!

Upon opening the sample pack of this, I breathed in the aroma of the dry leaves. After all the other samples I've recently tried, I've become used to smelling grass, maybe fruit like melon/lychee, or orange and spice or fermented butter. But this smelt simply like tea! The freshest invigorating tea smell that made me think this would be a lovely experience.
The first infusion for 3 minutes with near boiling water showed that this was a well-oxidised oolong, producing a dark liquor almost like a black (red) tea.
The taste was sensational- for me, it was everything tea should be. It had that indefinable bright tea flavour that you get with Ceylon black teas, but not as 'spiky' as they can be. And a hint of muscatel flavour of the best darjeeling but without that astringent/bitterness that sometimes comes with those.
This had that bright high-liquor flavour that lifts your spirits and can lift your whole mood for the day! Although bright and lifting, it's smooth and sweet too, it fills the mouth and the flavour lingers after you've finished the cup.
There is a hint of apple here, and there is also a hint of smoky wood too, but they are subtle hints because the overall flavour is of bright but smooth fresh tea that puts a smile on your face.
I made a 2nd infusion for 5 minutes, and it was equally as rewarding, so although expensive, this is worth the price.
Although technically an oolong, this tastes like the smoothest black tea, and is now what I will brew if I want to demonstrate to someone what tea should really taste like.
  • The varying colors are gorgeous!

Jing’s Oriental Beauty is just one more reason for me to continue my oolong-passion: Its dry leaf is a melange of colors and shapes: Silvery tips mingle with leaves that are alternately dark brown and twisted, medium chocolate brown and flat. The nose is woody, spicy (nutmeg?) and somewhat sweet.

In the cup, the liquor is a lovely medium amber, and the nose remains woody and sweet. I have had Dong Feng’s that taste “over roasted” but this tea is remarkably smooth: The wood remains, but there is also honey, dried fig, and that lovely hint of nutmeg.

The tea is good for several steeps, so keep the infusions coming. Also, do take time to admire the lovely spent leaves: The varying colors are gorgeous!

Tips: I advise making this tea with just under boiling water, 208F should work. You want the water this hot because this tea has a lot of flavor to extract. But after infusing, allow it to cool a bit: The intense flavors emerge after a bit of a cool-down.
