Puerh teas are growing in popularity as they become known for their health qualities and fantastic flavour. These mini tuos hail from Xiaguan Factory in Yunnan province in China and encapsulate what a good puerh is - rich yet subtle, with the warmth of smokiness and apricot.

These mini tuos are the perfect size to produce one pot of tea. Simply take one tuo per cup, infuse for 1 minute, reducing infusion time as tea unfurls fully. Pour away the first infusion after steeping for a few second in near-boiling water.

*Based on 1 tuo per serving, infused 5 times.

Appearance

Dry leaf: Small compressed circular medallion of leaf with concave base, wrapped in white tissue. Leaf is a combination of pale, pewter strands with darker brown and grey leaf
Wet leaf: When infused, the leaf becomes a variegated birch and olive green, losing its pewter and grey hues
Liquor: Deep yellow green

Aroma

Dry leaf: In its compressed state, the leaf has a very discreet aromatic profile: gentle, warm and straw-like
Liquor: Warm and nourishing: earth and spring forest floor. Some tea bush and tobacco leaf sweetness. Hint of lychee fruit in the finish

Flavour

Liquor: Gentle and gracious introduction to this often challenging tea style: supple, velvety and full, with flavours in which a mild almond softness is highlighted with some gentle herbal notes

Infuse: 1 tuo per 250ml; use near-boiling water; infuse for 30-60 seconds; re-infuse 5-7 times reducing infusion time as tea unfurls fully

  • A lovely smooth and comforting cup of tea

Until I heard about this company in a newspaper article, my only experience of unusual tea's came from buying loose tea from health food shops and oriental supermarkets. After having tried about a dozen different kinds of japanese and chinese green teas from jing and other suppliers I have to say this is my favourite so far. It's smooth, comforting and has a lovely earthy aroma. What surprised me most of all was that this is so different from any other green tea I've had. The only other time I've tried drinks of the same type that have tasted so different from one another is when sampling diffrerent single malt whiskies.
  • A tea newbie writes: Approachable Puerh for a beginner

As someone who has only rediscovered leaf teas in the last month or so, I had only tried Puerh once before, having heard of its reputation as a healthy drink but not knowing anything more about it. I now know it was a loose leaf "cooked" Puerh, but I seem to be one of those who finds the strong aroma of cooked Puerh a bit too dominant for my taste, so I was cautious but curious as I unwrapped my first tuo. Following JING's helpful instructions printed on the pack, I used my small glass gongfu pot, discarding the first brief infusion. The first proper infusion, about a minute, yielded a golden brew with a surprisingly smoky flavour with fruity apricot tones. A picnic in a shady forest with distant wood fire. The second infusion was initially less fruity and more grassy/mineral, but the apricot came through again as it cooled with a lingering aftertaste. For subsequent infusions I shorted the steeping time as advised on the pack. The flavour mellowed with the two notes of smoke and fruity sweetness becoming less distinct. The lingering aroma of incense in the dim light of a cathedral. The tea stood up well into the fifth infusion, and probably a sixth too, but by then I had to abandon my tea station and go run some errands. All in all an intriguingly complex tea that I would definitely drink again.
