Organic Darjeeling First Flush 2019 Competition Winner Black Tea

The Origin Story

The Seeyok Tea Estate was announced as the 2019 winner of the JING Excellence at Origin Competition, producing the best Darjeeling First Flush of the year. The competition was launched by JING Founder, Ed Eisler, who felt inspired to create something that celebrates the region’s exceptional craftsmanship, community and quality of tea. Darjeeling’s foremost gardens entered the competition and were rigorously judged by a panel of experts to find the First Flush tea that best expressed the unique character of Darjeeling. Judge Andrew Jefford commented, 'pungency, all-round satisfaction, brightness, freshness – the Seeyok tea had it all. It seemed to encapsulate the region the best.'

India - Darjeeling

Darjeeling, at the base of the Himalayas, produces uniquely fragrant black teas

Founded in 1869, Seeyok lies roughly forty kilometres from Darjeeling in the Mirik Valley. With 464 people working across its 154 hectares, the teas coming from this estate have been organic since 1994, with a holistic and biodynamic approach to farming. Encouraging flora and fauna to flourish in the grounds is of paramount importance, making Seeyok’s gardens a lush, rich paradise. Quality of life is also a cornerstone of how the estate operates.

    Stunningly good
A newcomer to Darjeeling, I wasn't sure that this competition winner could compete with the other excellent first flush teas on offer. There is, however, something so light and yet richly satisfying about this clear golden cup, that I shall definitely be buying it again. Strawberry, forest fruit aromas and a fresh, fruity palate with incredible depth of flavour. Wonderful.
