Phoenix Thunder Oolong Tea
The Origin Story
Oolong teas that come from the Phoenix Mountain range of Guangdong, China, are world-famed for their specific flavour profiles, often named after the fruit or floral aromas present – for example, our Phoenix Honey Orchid. We were especially fortunate this season to source a truly exemplary and very rare Phoenix tea, striking in its exceptional flavour profile that is sweet, smooth, and syrupy; only possible through totally unique conditions at terroir and flawless production.
This almost pink infusion has heady aromas of warm iris and orchid that give way to an exceptional taste profile, boasting syrupy-sweet, butterscotch notes with baked apricot and tropical fruits – differentiated to Phoenix Honey Orchid oolong with its superbly thick texture, and profoundly complex taste.
The cultivar of this tea is ‘Lei Kou Chai’ - legend has it that an ancient tea tree was struck by lightning; half of the tree died but half survived and farmers gave it this name in recognition. Cuttings were taken from the mother tree and it has been cultivated ever since. Oxidised at 30% in an ‘open leaf’ style, the dry leaf is brown-black and twisted.
