How to make matcha green tea?
To make matcha green tea, sift 1 teaspoon of matcha powder into a bowl to remove clumps. Heat water to about 80°C and pour 60ml over the powder. Using a bamboo whisk (chasen), whisk briskly in a zigzag motion for 20–30 seconds until the matcha is fully dissolved and frothy. For a thinner tea (usucha), use less matcha and more water (180ml); for a thicker tea (koicha), use more matcha and less water (85ml) with gentle whisking. Enjoy immediately, plain or sweetened, or add steamed milk for a matcha latte.
How to use a matcha whisk?
To use a matcha whisk (chasen), add 1-2 teaspoons of matcha powder to a bowl with about 2 ounces of hot water (175°F/80°C). Soak the whisk beforehand to soften the bristles, then whisk briskly in an "M" or "W" motion using your wrist until the matcha is smooth and frothy. Avoid pressing the whisk against the bowl's bottom, and enjoy once the surface is bubbly.
What is a matcha bowl?
A matcha bowl, or chawan, is a wide, shallow ceramic bowl specifically designed for preparing and drinking matcha. Its shape allows for easy whisking of the matcha powder and water to achieve a smooth, frothy consistency.
Do you drink matcha from the bowl?
Yes, traditionally, matcha is sipped directly from the bowl (chawan). After whisking, the drinker lifts the bowl with both hands and drinks the matcha, savoring its taste and texture.
The ceremony around matcha dates back hundreds of years to medieval Japan. When Zen monks returning from voyages to China brought back the ritual and tools for preparing this powdered green tea. These matcha tools are still used by matcha lovers today, such as our bamboo chasen (tea whisk) and handmade chawan (tea bowl) which are perfect for traditional matcha.
