Teaware Frequently Asked Questions

  • How do I choose a teapot?

The right teapot depends on what you infuse most: a wide infuser or basket suits loose leaf that needs room to unfurl, while a smaller pot works well for concentrated black tea. Material also matters, glass and porcelain keep flavours neutral between infusions, cast iron holds heat longest. Our full guide, What to Look for When Choosing a Teapot, covers the detail.
  • What's the difference between a tea infuser and a teapot?

An infuser is a basket, ball or mesh insert that holds loose leaf inside any cup or pot, giving the leaves room to expand before you lift it out. A teapot is the vessel itself, often with a built-in infuser, designed to infuse and pour in one. Many loose leaf drinkers keep both to hand, see our guide to loose leaf tea for more on infusing it well.
  • Can I use the same teapot for all tea types, or do I need different vessels for loose leaf vs tea bags?

One good teapot with a fine infuser will happily infuse any loose leaf tea, from delicate white to robust black, what matters more than the tea type is giving the leaves enough space to unfurl. Pyramid tea bags need even less: just a mug or pot with room for water to circulate. Explore our full loose leaf range to see just how much can go through one good pot.
  • Why does water quality matter for infusing tea?

Water makes up most of your cup, so its mineral content and temperature directly shape how flavours are drawn out, too hard or over-boiled, and delicate teas turn flat or bitter. Different teas also need different temperatures: green and white teas prefer cooler water than black tea. See To Boil or Not to Boil: Water Temperature for Tea and What Water Is Best for Tea? for the full detail.
  • What's the best way to store tea to keep it fresh?

Keep tea in an airtight container, away from light, heat and strong odours, exactly what our refill caddies in this collection are built for. Buy loose leaf in smaller quantities and use it within a few months of opening, since tea loses aroma gradually rather than spoiling outright. For more, see How to Know Whether Your Tea Is Fresh
